I have loved seeing more families choose colorful, traditional birthday themes lately, and this sweet Party Animal cake smash may be one of my favorites. The Cutest Little Party Animal

This set was filled with all the things that make a first birthday feel like a celebration—colorful balloons, birthday banners and a whole group of stuffed animals wearing tiny party hats.

The colors were bright and happy without taking the focus away from the birthday girl. Her sweet white birthday outfit was absolutely perfect against the colorful background, and the tiny cakes embroidered across the front could not have coordinated any better.

We started with a few simple portraits before bringing out the cake. I always love getting these clean birthday pictures first. They give parents a chance to see all those little details before the frosting, crumbs and cake-covered hands begin.

Then It Was Time for Cake

She did not need much convincing once the cake arrived. She tasted the frosting, dug in with both hands and eventually put the wooden spoon to very good use.

These are always some of my favorite pictures from a cake smash—the little tongue sticking out, the proud smile after pulling off a giant piece of cake and those wonderfully messy hands. You simply cannot plan those expressions, and that is exactly what makes them so special.

By the end, the cake was in pieces, the frosting was everywhere and she was completely pleased with herself. In other words, it was a very successful cake smash.

Letting Them Be One

Cake smash sessions do not have to be perfectly posed from beginning to end. One-year-olds are busy, curious and full of personality. The best photographs happen when we give them room to explore, play and show us exactly who they are.

Sometimes that means a perfect smile. Sometimes it means making a funny face, waving a cake-covered hand or sitting proudly in the middle of a completely demolished cake. I want parents to remember all of it.
