How I Create Custom Cake Smash Sets in My Canton GA Photography Studio

One thing that makes sessions at Victoria Lee Photography a little different is that most of the sets you see in my photos are built right here in my studio. I don’t use printed backdrops for my cake smash sessions. Instead, I design and create custom setups using real props, balloons, textures, and pieces that I’ve collected or made over the years.

Creating these custom sets is one of my favorite parts of being a Cake Smash Photographer in Canton GA, and it’s what helps every session feel unique.

Designing Each Cake Smash Set

Every cake smash session starts with a theme or color palette. Sometimes parents come in with a specific idea — like a western cowboy theme, a storybook theme, or something soft and classic. Other times they simply give me colors they love, and I build the design from there.

From there, I start pulling pieces together from my prop collection. Over the years I’ve collected quite a few things — vintage bowls, wooden crates, signs, quilts, themed props, and balloons in just about every color.

The goal is always the same — create something playful, beautiful, and timeless that highlights your baby’s first birthday.

Real Props Make a Big Difference

Using real props instead of printed backdrops helps create more depth and texture in the images. Things like balloon garlands, wooden pieces, vintage props, and themed decorations add layers to the photos that make them feel more natural.

It also allows babies to interact with the set in a fun way. They can touch things, explore, and move around, which usually leads to those sweet candid moments parents love.

And of course, when the cake comes out, that’s when the real fun begins.

A Studio Designed for First Birthday Sessions

My Canton GA photography studio is set up specifically with babies and young children in mind. Everything is designed to keep sessions relaxed, fun, and comfortable for families.

Most cake smash sessions include a few traditional portraits first before we bring out the cake. Then babies get to dig in, explore, and make a big (adorable) mess.

These sessions celebrate such a special milestone — that first birthday.
